After several requests to extend mobile internet pack validity, TRAI on Friday finally decided to increase validity to 365 days from the current 90 days.
New rules from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) would allow telecom operators in the country to offer mobile data packs with validity of one year.
TRAI has notified The Telecom Consumers Protection Regulations, 2016 to allow data packs with longer validity.
This is very good news for the users who do not consume a lot of mobile data, and are looking for internet packs with longer validity. Currently, the mobile data packs are available with maximum 90 days validity. The unused data in the pack gets forfeited at the end of the validity period. Also, the cost per MB is much higher than the data packs.
TRAI said that the present regulatory regime allows
“telecom service providers to offer data services in the form of Special Tariff Voucher (STV) either exclusively or in combination with other tariff items with a maximum permitted validity of 90 days”.
TRAI also said the move will help mobile data usage by marginal consumers and also attract first-time internet users. Out of a total wireless subscriber base of 103.37 crore, only 31.35 users used internet at the end of March this year.
